RCKC Athletes Win CKBC Awards

November 11, 2013

Three of the athletes from Ridge won the Canoe Kayak BC Athlete Of The Year awards. Brian Malfesi for Men, Tessa Nagai for Women, and Kathy Nay for Masters. Congratulations!

Training Camp With Olympians In BC

November 8-11, 2013

Three Olympians were in Burnaby, training the athletes from all over British Columbia during the Canoe Kayak BC Training Camp held on November 8-11. Adam Tenwolde, Mark Klevinas, and Brady Reardon showed the advanced techniques of canoeing and kayaking to the youth from the clubs from Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Burnaby, Fort Langley, Victoria, Nanaimo, and Kamloops. Ghost Ridge Timeline Of Terror

November 5, 2013

RCKC was one of the groups who took part in building the sets and performing as actors during the Halloween event at the Albion Fairgrounds during October. Each of the groups received $3800 towards their activities.

Whonnock Lake Park Expansion Plan Discussed By Maple Ridge City Council

The expansion of the park in the Whonnock Lake area was discussed by Maple Ridge City Council. The area had been identified as a potential site for an expanded facility for the Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club (RCKC).

Community Gaming Grant To Be Received From The Province Of British Columbia, Announced By MLAs Marc Dalton And Doug Bing

October 3, 2013

Marc Dalton, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission and Doug Bing, MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows announced a Community Gaming Grant of $19,500 to RCKC at the Pacific Regatta. Sherry Hunt, Vice Commodore, expressed that the club is thankful for the grant and will be purchasing life jackets, paddles, and boats to replace those that are no longer functional due to years of use. Funds will also be used to help cover administration costs for program registrations to keep program costs reasonable to ensure accessibility for community members.

Ghost Ridge Fundraising Help Needed

Albion Fair Grounds, Maple Ridge, British Columbia

Each year, RCKC helps the Ghost Ridge event by building the haunted house, building the sets and props, performing as scary characters, and volunteering in other duties. The funds from helping out goes towards programs for the club's young athletes. If you would like to help out, please contact the Program Coordinator for a schedule.

After a year's break, I was asked to take over the RCKC web site again. But I would like to thank Clay Lake for all of the hard work he put into it the past year. Seems like he has several projects going on that are bound to be show stopping (such as music for Ghost Ridge). Keep an eye out for what Ridge will be doing in the next while!

Pacific Cup 2013

September 28 - 29, 2013

Whonnock Lake, Maple Ridge, British Columbia

Congratulations to Gig Harbor Canoe And Kayak Club for winning the Pacific Cup! Good job to everyone else competing and braving the heavy rains and the winds. Due to the rain, the 500m finals that were to take place at the end of Saturday, were postponed to the next day, on Sunday. At least 160 athletes were entered in the largest sprint competition in Western North America.

Canada Summer Games In Sherbrook, Quebec - Medals For Brian Malfesi

August 10-17, 2013

RCKC's Brian Malfesi won several medals for the Canoe Kayak category in the Canada Summer Games held August 10­17. Bronze in the K-2 200 m with teammate Patrick Dann, Gold in the men’s K-1 1000 m and Silver in the K-1 500 m. Also in attendance was Alex Brent.

Rotary Duck Race

August 4, 2013

The annual Rotary Duck Race was held at the Maple Ridge Park on August 4. RCKC was one of the groups helping with this fundraiser by selling tickets. Each ticket buys a rubber duck. The ducks are released on the river and the first ones to reach the finish line are granted prizes.

The annual regatta held with fun events was attended by athletes from all over. Some of the events included relays, knockouts, resistors, and chariot races.

MACAI Presents Accessibility Award To RCKC

July 9, 2013

The Municipal Advisory Council on Accessibility Issues (MACAI) presented Ridge Canoe and Kayak with an accessibility award for buying equipment to allow people with disabilities to paddle. At the club, RCKC has trained coaches and volunteers to facilitate adaptive paddling.

Coaching Instructor Positions Are Available

We are seeking Summer Program Instructors for an opportunity to work in a fun environment. See the descriptions below:

Senior Instructor

The Senior Instructor provides professional administrative support for club programming, promotes fun, supportive and well organized programs in a safe environment, supports teambuilding and fair play, and encourages all participants to achieve to the best of their ability. As a lead instructor team member, the responsibilities includes overseeing the daily operations and participating in speaking presentations. This position takes place May 13, 2013 to Aug 23, 2013. The deadline to apply is on Apr 20, 2013. For more details, refer to the job description for this position.

Summer Program Instructors (2)

The Summer Program Instructor provides professional administrative support for club programming, promotes fun, supportive and well organized programs in a safe environment, supports teambuilding and fair play, and encourages all participants to achieve to the best of their ability. At one time, there were other clubs all over British Columbia such as in Summerland, Port Moody, Coquitlam, Chase, Revelstoke, Salmon Arm, Penticton, and Port Coquitlam. Today, the clubs which remained after lasting throughout the years are in Maple Ridge, Burnaby, Pitt Meadows, Langley, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Victoria, and Kamloops.
